Volunteers' Voices

"I remember vividly my first involvement with FLC. It began with the 'Adopt-A-Family' program. I have been actively involved in their various programs as a befriender, as well as a volunteer counsellor to the Camp TOUGH. I am totally impressed with their programs and services offered to the community. The people in FLC are very focused and committed in their work and their various programs. They are really a bunch of dedicated and devoted people and no doubt I am extremely proud to be part of FLC!"

" I have been a volunteer with the FLC in several of its programmes and I enjoyed every minute of it. Volunteering in FLC gives me the oppotunities to do something meaningful - both in my life and the life of others. Yes! It benefits both parties. I believe that each word or act of kindness though small, goes a long way. It is like sowing a seed that will grow and one day bring forth its fruit of kindness. The best part is that I can do it at my own time and pace."

It was by chance that I heard David on the radio, in year 2002, appealing to members of the public to volunteer in one of the fund-raising events. Not knowing how I could help, I made the call to Family Life Centre to enquire. I was then asked to visit their office at the old premises - Goldhill Plaza, and attend a Volunteers' briefing. The rest was then history.

It was really an eye-opener for me as a volunteer of FLC. Blessed am I to be able to pick up knowledge and skills by assisting in camps, seminars and workshops. David had been most patient and generous in his sharing of experiences and eventually roped me in to be an 'Almost-Full-Time Volunteer'!

Volunteering in FLC had made me realise what Social Service is all about. I'm now way past caring about office-politics, but rather, more concerned about how inmates can integrate into their families, how parents can be brought geater awareness of family life education, and also how to secure sustaining funds to continue FLC's operation.

I've come to realise never to take things for granted... And most of all, doing the researches on these family life education topics had made me appreciate my own families more than ever before! For without the support of my family, how could I leave my 2 young daughters while I'm out, aspiring to make better lives for others?

I have been associated with David and the Family Life Centre for several years. David and his team of volunteers had gone out of their way to provide free community services on several projects. I have also learned a great deal from David and Family Life Centre.

I have also participated in some of the programmes such as Bridging Families Ties and the Parenting Workshops conducted at the Prisons. At the Tough Camp and other Youth-at-risk befriending projects, I have found that most of the clients are always looking for strength, love and hope. From this, we learned to continue to serve the needs of others with sincerity, care and hope.
